parties amoungst other things...

its tuesday already or is it only tuesday... my thoughts exactly. the weekend has come and gone and it felt like a long weekend which is a positive... after our ridiculous afternoon on saturday we redeemed it by having rollkuchen, farmer sausage and watermelon (a good mennonite fave) at my parents house which made me feel warm and fuzzy.. it basically is like eating summer...
on sunday we decided to be spontaneous (something we rarely ever do) and we packed up and headed to winnipeg to have a picnic and walk around assinaboine park.. it was a good day! the weather was perfect and the boys did really well.. we even got to see Lori (she did her dts with vancouver while we were there) after the park we headed home because we had some partying to do with the vbergs. jesse celebrated his first birthday in all out style. a perfect day for a perfect party. lisa outdid herself and the we all had so much fun.... for those of you who know me well you may remember i am not big on dirty... it kills dave how clean i keep the boys and how crazy it makes me when they are dirty.. well i was inspired to give it a go and let the boys get as dirty as they wanted at the party - we were outside among pavement, stones, sidewalk chalk, cake and dirt.... they were disgustingly happy and it made me happy too... plus the bath after felt much more rewarding to watch it all disappear.... it was a GOOD day!

***warning - blanket statments being made

**updated and rewritten
usually mennonites and more precisely the good people of southern manitoba are kind, generous, laid back and quite easy going. good people to be around.. today that was not my experience and well i am not even sure where to start... should i start by saying mennonites are selfish, mennonites don't make good lines, winkler is not good at throwing a big event or start by saying at least we got to see Stanley (kind of)...
dustin penner and his white limo cruised into winkler today bringing the stanley cup: let me preface my rant by saying this was so generous of him and i totally appreciate the fact that he was willing to share his 24 hours with all of us. well done dustin and thanks....
but... our experience is a bad one and having been to big events before in bigger cities i must say winkler needs some help. those of us who stood in line for a few hours ahead of time were pushed aside as greedy people some of who have probably never even heard of hockey pushed there way passed us, over and under lame rope that was meant to hold the masses. there we were in what was probably +50degree heat waiting and waiting... the ceremony was long and too many people talked for too long.. it was nice he got plaques and keys to the city and even his high school jersey retired - i'm happy for him. then the chaos ensued and those ropes meant nothing. there were some parents trying to tell there poor kids who had waited hours that it was wrong to go under the ropes and cut in (unlike the other half of the parents who were pushing there kids over other kids just to get closer). and it just kept getting hotter. dustin left (poor guy was so hot in his huge jersey) and the picture taking kept going although it seemed we kept getting further and futher from the front of the line we had waited so patiently in.. needless to say keeping two one year olds who are up from naps and hotter than hell happy was not working and we sadly gave in after waiting so long and went home. we did get these two shots of the boys "with the cup"... thanks stanley for the memories as for the people in our small town who pushed there way past everyone else - shame on you. and for the organizers of the event - yea better luck next time. geez.

when will it end

i was convinced all my life all i ever wanted to do was be a mom... now i am not so sure.. days seem to get harder and harder than life will throw you a few good days just enough so you can start to convince yourself you can deal and then BANG more hard days... it seems endless..
both boys are getting teeth which doesn't help and both now have bad summer colds which makes the congestion and runny noses difficult to allow sleep... and you know what just to top it off there is TWO of them... when one is screaming after waking up after only a 20 minute nap it wakes the other one up who would have been peacefully in dream land but nope now you have TWO screaming kids who are so painfully tired and covered in snot.... when will it end?

chaotic creativity...

following hot on the heels of my last post about creativity i was humbled to receive a gift from friends via email. they have been behind me for a few years now the kind of people you want on your side cheering you on through life... anyways they blessed me with something unique and thoughtful and something that speaks to the centre of my soul... a beautiful book by Kim McMechan as well as a one hour session with kim on the phone. she has become a personal creative life coach and her target are busy moms and artists and she desires to help them discover how to find more time for what they value and ache for so we can have a more sane, productive and balanced creative life.
i have been a huge fan of kim's since hearing her sing at a worship event at the winnipeg centre vineyard since then she has put on some records of her own and begun to teach writing workshops. she also writes candidly on her blog.. go check her out HERE.
this weekend was very creative. MSS had an online crop and i got a few layouts done.. you can check out my scrapbooking gallery above for some of them.
looking forward to one more day of dave being home. i love long weekends and short weeks. not much planned for this week.. july is going to busy with lots of visitors which i am so looking forward to.. i think a day in winnipeg is also in order soon.. i can't wait to see lindsey who arrived back in the peg last week...
i also realized i have forgotten to share another new thing going on in my life.... i have taken up a part time job - only a couple days a week... (evenings).. back at Mulligans (former Golf Course Restaurant) Its been fun to just have something totally different to do and make a little extra cash on the side. It works well because I go to work after Dave comes home or on the weekends. I think he likes the time with the boys as well.. I think that's all I have for now. I will write again next week... The offer on the Mei Tai is still available... You won't regret it. Let me know if you want more info.. The post further down was updated with more pics of me actually using it with the boys. (made me almost change my mind but i really want an ergo)

create...

i am creative.. i have always loved to create things of beauty... i have been inspired lately to create not only to give away but also to preserve memories. i am in the process of doing some altered canvas's for a friend and also working on some wedding invitations for friends. i have enjoyed the process of creating more and more. i have also been doing more scrapbooking..(more added to my Scrapbooking Gallery above all the time)... just wanted to encourage you to create.. in whatever way that suits you - its good to have an outlet.

uninspired..

thats how i feel these days at least when it comes to blogging.. some days its hard to come up with something clever to write and i am afraid most facets of my life are quite mundane.. the week was good. thats hard these days.. i seem to have bad or good days never great, fantastic or all too memorable.. of course my kids are memorable and they are daily surprising me with new things they can do... but so often throughout the day a major meltdown seems to overshadow the good things. thats been hard lately.. my boys have learned how to have meltdowns and they are hard to console (especially because it usually happens at the same time) hello.. shouldn't twin moms have more arms or something?
i am trying to wake up these days remember that joy is a choice and most of the things i feel i just let control my life when really i have a choice to let some things completely overwhelm me. finding time to enjoy the small things..
like how ari loves to sit in my lap and look at books
like how noah eats anything and everything in sight
like how they now know the signs for "eat", "more", "milk", "all done" and "thank you" (we are working on "please")
like how they wave and clap and blow kisses
like how they sign "thank you" when you put them in their car seat
like how they love to make boy noises when playing with cars and trucks
like how they snuggle on you when they are tired
like how they say mummum from their cribs when they are done napping

yes its good to remember to choose to enjoy these moments and choose joy in as many circumstances as i can.

the fruit (vegetation) of my labor...

the one thing i have loved about owning a house is owning a yard.. one that comes with a garden. although i am not so great at it some days. i am enjoying the therapy of planting and reaping.. the lady here before us also enjoyed planting and we are still reaping the benefits of her beautiful flowers... thought i would share a piece of the beauty i am surrounded with daily..

a date with the past and the present...

well i did it. i went to my high school 10 year reunion and it was better than i expected. i guess i wasn't sure what to expect... the picnic at the park was fun.. it was interesting because it was pretty much who i thought would be there and it was fun to catch up. its nice how kids can be a great conversation starter. in the evening we went to this concert back where i used to party and i really enjoyed running into old friends there. i'm glad i went and it was healing to see how far i've come and also refreshing to see that i could greet the past with a full heart knowing that life has taken me on some interesting paths since high school and life is full.
which takes me to the present and the honor it was to celebrate fathers day today.. my life is rich and i'm blessed with the best dad and the best dad to my kids. doubly blessed seems to be a pattern in my life. fathers day started with a baked peach french toast topped with whip cream.. the boys and i gave dave his gifts.. strawberry poky from ari and chocolate poky from noah. i had made a mini book for dave with the 8 reasons i love him and this hockey magazine he wanted... we relaxed the rest of the morning and then dave was called to work.. yea for the whole afternoon. later we headed to my parents where we ate with my whole family. it was a great day and although the boys each got a new tooth and were not at their best it was a good day! to honor the weekend here are the best shots......yes some of the pics are doubles but i had little time and its just the way picasa did it.

wide open

so this is me being terrified... as you might have picked up on my last post things have been not so great around the difran house.. its mostly me.. my attitude has been in the crapper and i have been feeling slimed left and right.. this morning it hit me.. HARD. i am terrified and in my fear i am welcoming all sorts of lies.. this weekend i have my 10 year high school reunion. many mixed emotions are coming to the surface. high school doesn't bring too many fond memories for me.. don't get me wrong i have good memories but the person i was back then is just so far from who i am these days and its hard to reconcile the two.. and with the eminent crashing of those two people this weekend its left me a little wounded.
i was pretty well liked.. had a great bunch of friends. i had different sets of friends.. there were those who i would consider friends and we would talk everyone once in awhile no hostility or anything and then there were these two girls who i did everything with.. we were a little posy and i loved it. we have all since grown apart but they bring me fond memories... i had moments - big mistakes and lots of little mistakes... i tried so hard to be somebody else and definitely didn't know who i was or who i was meant to be.. i dated bad guys for me and did stupid things in hopes of keeping those relationships.. my heart was broken badly and i pushed those things deep down inside until some time later. i was mean to certain people all out of my own insecurities and my desperate need to be liked and noticed. its painful to look back on some of it. but in the midst of pain there comes deep appreciation for the woman i am now and the path i took after. i have been around the world and made a complete change in all areas of my life.. at least i thought i had until today.. i really see the need to have it all together and especially now i want to look a certain way to certain people... so far from who i thought i had become. maybe this is just a little bump in the road and a great way to remember who i really am and how far i have come. i spent almost 10 year away from my home town and although i never felt i ran it has been hard coming back and with this approaching gathering where i will bump into old friends, old boyfriends and old "enemies" i am careful to remember that the old is gone and the new has come.. life has come out of these places. new life.
i am going to choose to remember the restoration that has taken place and the new freedom i have in knowing who i am.. who i really am.
so heres to seeing old friends and making new friends and for trying to remember that although i survived high school what comes next is meant for thriving.

life for now

it feels like i have been neglecting to write these days.. my outlook on life has been a bit in the crapper. some days all i can do is get through you know... i know that there is a time and a season for all things and that these days are going to be gone so quick but when you are right in the middle of it that perspective sometimes gets lost... last week was a hard one with the boys being sick again and just everything piling up. the weekend was much brighter as we had a last minute visit from friends from ontario. morgan is daves best friend and they grew up together. we just were in ontario to celebrate morgan & martha's wedding. at three weeks married they came here to visit us and we had a great time. it was excellent to catch up. it was also nice to watch them get time to just relax as they have obviously been so busy for the last few months. they also had just returned from a two week honeymoon in italy.. yea poor them. it was nice to see them interact with the boys who only took about half a day to warm up to new people in the house. we went to a bbq on friday night that our small group was having. on saturday the boys naps were all over the place so it seemed we got nothing done.. we did end up getting to IGA for there closing 50% off sale... we stocked up on lots of goodies.. i felt a twinge of sadness at the thought of them closing there doors for good basically because we as a small town have been taken over by the BIG stores.. and for those of you who don't know I am an IGA alumn.. spent some time as a cashier.
after we went out walking and they unloaded a bunch of cash at my fave store in winkler My Scrap Shoppe from there we walked to 1027 and had gelato which of course was good but not quite Italy...After putting the boys to bed I made a killer Pad Thai and we later enjoyed a little bonfire (after the rain of course). Sunday we spent the morning being lazy and later went to Tasti's for lunch and walked the Morden Park. After a long afternoon nap we got a babysitter and the four of us went out to Boston Pizza. It was so great to have them around.. Monday morning I got up at 4:30am and took them to the airport getting back in time to say goodbye to Dave as he left for work...Still recovering.
The boys have been a bit off these days.. of course the normal cold and cough that they have now had since January.. Noah had croup again last week and the runny noses are endless.. On top of that I am sure they are working on some teeth.. most of the time its manageable but I have been surprised at the level of temper tantrums they can have.. yikes. It's painful...
That was the weekend and already its Tuesday evening which brings me hope.. We had our last stay & play this morning which was amazing.. everyone brought food and we shared breakfast. I will miss that... you begin to foster relationships and its nice to have somewhere to go each tuesday morning.. we will look forward to going again next fall.
i will leave you with some pics.. more to come of our weekend when i get them loaded..

i am not afraid to admit i am a closet hockey fan.. i had hometown pride tonite as i watched the ducks win the stanley cup and look forward to seeing dustin penner bring the cup home.. does that mean that we will now have a sign with his face on it? winkler home of stanley cup champion.. or something like that....

the sounds coming from my house today...

the dryer
blood curtling screams
coughing
the sound of the nose hose
thud - as many diapers hit the floor
crying
noah hitting his head back on his high chair as he now likes to throw temper tantrums
splash - as i spilled water all over the floor
the sound of their walkers tearing up the place
more crying
lots more coughing
oh and the sound you didn't hear were my tears as they rolled down my cheeks and hit the floor
is it over yet? please God let it be over...

feeling blah...

maybe its the weather maybe its something else... life feels a bit blah. its crazy how some days things can just feel wrong you know... i have been really busy and feel inadequate to even tell you what has all happened. a quick summary for those of you who are curious..
sunday - we had the boys party which was great. finally there was a break in the rainy weather and we had some close friends over for a backyard BBQ. It was fun. The boys loved opening their gifts we had some "super"burgers and cupcakes.
monday - don't remember much but i did talk to a friend far away which was such a blessing and huge HIGHLIGHT.. i miss you Jo. thanks for encouraging me and catching me up on 'couve news
tuesday - we went to stay and play as usual which is a highlight except for this woman who has boundary issues.. i would consider my kids pretty laid back and usually pretty content to just sit and watch other kids and pick up toys and put them in their mouths well at one point one of them cried out for me so i sat down beside them and they both crawled over me and hugged me and i wouldn't say they were whining but they just wanted mommy love well this woman who i don't know from adam say "you have fussy kids hey" WHAT? WHO ARE YOU? UGG.. i always try to sit as far away from her as possible and wonder what world she grew up in that she can say things like that to strangers.. yea ok she hit a nerve (she usually does) i need to grow in patience for such people i guess.. had a crazy day - the boys were a little off...they did enjoy watching me mow the lawn from the front door. .. i attended a class at MSS late because dave was working late which really bugged me... the one night you know.. i quickly went to Tim's to pick up a Latte and of course they were out of the milk part so they asked me to wait 5min. I said I had no time so I just got a boring coffee... the class was awesome although it was a Fathers Day project and my feelings for Dave were not the way they should have been... got home and found out the computer was broken... not even going to go there...
today - tried to fix the computer... so frusterating.. finally brought it in. hopefully get it back tommorow (thats why there is no pics with this post). went to small group this morning which was so good... so what i needed and i learned alot about what it looks like when your kid has worms..., came home fed the boys lunch, tried to stay sane while tackling one of the millions of projects i have on the go... got one done while the boys napped. got to the photo studio for the boys one year old pics.. they did ok thanks to the fridge DJ they got for their birthday which plays Old MacDonald which makes them get their groove on.. she got some good shots, dropped off my finished project for a friend, picked up DQ for supper, got our van to the shop where the brakes are being fixed tommorow, now sitting at my mom's trying not to think about much.. i will try to post some pics when i get my computer back...

living with one year old twins

so my first week living with one year old twins has come and gone... seems so much is different now that they reached the one year old mark.. or maybe it was the weekend away that makes it all seem different. i was feeling bad about what i am about to write as so many dear blogging friends are having a rough time with their kiddies right now but i decided to push aside all guilt and celebrate the peaceful spell we are having because i have had my share of downs, my share of sleepless nights and more than my share of headaches on a count of my twinnies. so raise your glass to toast the all coveted sleep through the night stage. now i am aware all good things usually come to an end so i am not gullible to the fact that this may change. but for now i am enjoying laying my head on my pillow and not getting up till after 7 when they want a bottle and then they long to go back to bed till 9AM - yes you read that right.. 9. its blissful and quiet in the house in the morning and i have time to either sleep, or drink coffee in peace.
Since turning one they have also not been that big on napping in the morning - i guess after their sleep in who could blame them.. so lately the norm is to put them down around 1pm and not hear from them till 3:30 or sometimes 4:00 - its beautiful luxery to get so much done those hours and although some days i am content to just sit on the couch and listen to my new Shawn McDonald Cd (thanks Carly) - all seems well.
Also new to our one year old household is crawling - yes gasp its late for most kids but my kids have always just been content to sit and play. but crawling is the new fave for my kiddies. Ari is a pro and Noah although timid is getting along. Noah on the other hand is a champion stander and holder of all things sturdy. He loves to clumsily walk behind his walker.
They are beginning to love to explore food..they have always eaten everything and anything. Update on the drinking situation. I was giving them partial milk/formula trying to get them switched to milk.. it was a no go. As you have all been along for the ride you might remember me saying they have been sick since January with a persistant cough and runny noses day after day. Well after giving them milk those symptoms seemed to get worse and worse as did the spitting up. So I decided to wait and give their little immune systems some more time. And although formula is eating away at our checkbook.. I'd rather be safe than sorry with allergies later on. I plan to try again soon...
Well I should go.. I have been in planning mode for their birthday party which takes place tommorow. I just got done making alot of hamburger patties for the BBQ we will have in their honor with lots of their little friends and friends of ours who have made this past year bearable. I need to go blow up ballons and hang streamers. I will update you all with pics next week...

Oh and for more fabulous news having nothing to do with being one.. my dearest, best friend and the boys Madrina (which means Godmother in Italian) recently got engaged.. We are so happy for Audrey and Ralph and cannot wait to be there for them in Texas when they get married next spring. Audrey asked me to be her maitron of honor and there is nothing I would like more than to stand up for the most inspiring, beautiful, fiesty, loyal and closest friend. The boys may also stand in as the cutest ring bearers... can't you just picture it. awww. congratulations guys.

we celebrated the boys birthday with my family yesterday. i gave in and allowed them their first sugar rush. noah devoured his cupcake - all of it. while ari was no so interested. grandma and grandpa bought them a pool and floating toys just in time for summer. as well as toys and clothes. we also got two dolls -which so far is the best gift ever. they love dolls. its adorable. boys will be boys i guess. anyways i had a great time this weekend and have so much to write about and will do so this week. the wedding was amazing... i also had time to reflect on a year ago and properly close the door on my grief regarding the boys birth and i wrote out their birth story which is far to long to post... (maybe i will, we will see)
so happy to say we reached this milestone.

one year

Dear Ari,
It's been a year that I have had the delight to be your mom. What a gift you are. We were blessed with a double portion. You came in like a lion forcing your way in front of your brother to be firstborn. How fitting since your name means Lion of God. You have always been content though. Even in the womb you just hung out when we saw you on ultrasounds you would wave every once in awhile but you were happy to just be buried under your brother. You were so little.. I remember when you first came out you were so small. Seeing you in the nursery that first day was a miracle. you were finally here. You have grown into your name. You are strong and have an adventurous spirit. you are quick to try new things and love to play and discover your toys. You are easily distracted especially when eating. I love how you don't make a lot of noise when you get up from your nap, but you just wait in anticipation for me to come open the door and there you are just watching and waiting. the smile i get when you and lock eyes melts my heart.
Ari you are such a joy and so easy to love. I love your goofy faces - you don't do it as much but you used to stick out your lower jaw and smile you had such a mischievous look on your face. You like to smack your lips and you caught onto the sign more so quick. sometimes you get clapping and more mixed up. you are so full of joy. I pray that you will always have that twinkle in your eyes - you have a goofy grin that lets everyone know something is going on in your head. May you continue to always have fun - always have an adventurous spirit and never be afraid to try new things.
I love you,
Mummy.

Dear Noah,
I can't believe you are one. It seems like such a short time ago I was awkwardly trying to get a hang of you guys and now here you are - one! You are a treasure. I find so much joy in your cuddles. You love to sit with people. You have soft sensitive spirit and you wound easier (emotionally) than your brother. You are so much like me in a smaller version. You are more aware of your surroundings and always know when mom is not close enough. You love to be around the action. Just happy to be with us.
Your name means rest and peace. You have that in your ability to just sit and receive love and cuddles. I want to be more like that. (you obviously get that from your dad). I pray that you Noah would always know how to rest and take in your surroundings. I think that you will be a good listener and a good balance for your brother. Never loose your sensitivity - God has gifted you with that. I love watching you discover new things - like that Noah's Ark we bought you - you love to pick up each animal and study them. Thats your go too toy. You definitly have a busy side chasing me around the kitchen in your walker or jumping like crazy in your JJ. You were the first to get the sign for eat - rightly so as you LOVE to eat. You are focused and you know what you want. I pray you would always have that. go for what you want my sweet little boy. continue to discover your world - touch, taste, see and smell all things. I love being your mom and i am so proud of you and want you to know you are so easy to love. i love you bubba!
Love Mummy.

My boys,
I love the interaction you have with each other. You are so excited to see each other when you wake up. You already seem to have some secret language. The scratchy on the bib thing when you eat has been going on for months. I just wonder what you are saying to each other. You imitate each other. Especially now with clapping.
Our hope is that you will grow as individuals - always confident in who each of you are - celebrating your differences and your uniqueness. As you recognize this we also hope you can always count on each other - that you would not just love each other but really like each other. Even though your faces are the same we pray people would see you both for who you are.
This year has been a challenge in many ways as we have all been learning how to live with each other. As your mom I have been learning how to fit into my new role. I am proud of how far we have all come. I commit to always striving to be a better mom to you both.
Love flows.

yep thats me time on my hands.. we are having a fantastic time here in ontario. we are here to celebrate the wedding of good friends morgan and martha who tommorow will be married. it has been great to hang out with friends and just relax.. that being said. oh i miss my boys. i talk to them a couple times a day on speaker phone and love to hear their little voices. its amazing the guilt and sadness i feel being apart from them for so long. i never worry about them as they are in great hands. but my heart aches to hold them and make them giggle and to cuddle them when they wake up. we will be home monday morning and i can't wait to see their little chubby cheeks and smiles.. missing them lots but enjoying the time we have here as well. i will post pics when we get home..

somthing is missing...

everywhere i go i feel like something is missing. my arms are empty, my bag is lighter and i have so much time on my hands. dave and i are in ontario for a wedding. its been good so far. i was able to sit at second cup and enjoy a coffee in the sunshine this morning. i have been working on the boys birth story and letters that i wanted to write them now that they are almost one!
this weekend is a memorable one for me... it was one year ago yesterday that i was admitted to the hospital and we spent this weekend waiting for news... so many emotions and memories are coming to me.. i am happy to have this time to write it all down.
i spoke with the boys on speaker phone this morning.. they greeted me with mommommmomma.. i love being their mom and i miss them so much.

show & tell

my niece has been asking if we can come to her grade 2 class for sometime now and yesterday was our show & tell debut.. it was adorable. the boys were on their best behavior as Kara told her class about her twin cousins. some of the questions and comments overheard:

"can you take their shoes off so i can see their feet?"
"i have a birthmark too.. its on my back and it gets bigger after each birthday party!"
"i think with those hockey shoes they are going to be hockey players"

thanks kara for showing off your cousins.. they were happy to oblige.

mothers day and other news..

a big thank you to all of you who voted for us over at The Twinkies.. We won! It's either because the boys are so cute or because I shamlessly forced all of you to vote.
my first mothers day was good... dave was nice enough to give the boys their early morning bottle so I could sleep but they he ended up dead weight in the morning when i tried to get him up so i got up early with the boys and HE slept in. oh well he did make me breakfast and gave me a homemade card (which if you know me wins big points). i got lots of time to myself in the afternoon and we spent the rest of the day and evening at my mom's with the fam. it was a good day!

noah and his new love of krispy kreme (the hat, he didn't get a donut)
and ari loving the swings

celebrating mothers...

my life has been touched by many women... some of them mothers, not all of them mine. all of them friends. really mothers day is also about celebrating women.... mothers are not always biological and some of my closest and dearest are not mothers in the flesh but i consider them part of this magical population of caregivers whether in the flesh or of the heart. i celebrate all of you today. to those who have lost and have children to grieve today my thoughts are with you. may you always know the gift you are and may you rest knowing your babies are waiting for you.. one day. my prayers are with you that you may be made ready to mother your future children and those already around you.. happy mothers day!

guilty pleasure?

yes i know i have been far too absent in posting. and with so much to post about it almost makes it harder to get it done... i have had a good week. it started with a fabulous weekend.. last saturday was super scrap day which happens out of the amazing imagination of marcy who runs the local My Scrap Shoppe. it was a full day of nothing but scrapping. i got to hang out with some amazing people who are so hard core and talented it inspired me beyond belief. i felt so full of life and creativity.. i got 4 layouts done and worked on some altered canvas's. which all turned out great.
the rest of my week has been good.. busy but good. stuff up everyday. the boys are doing good.. sleeping better but stuck on this 5am gotta eat tyrant.. i won't complain to much its better than it was.
my mother in law arrived last night for a week.. it couldn't be better timing for me. i feel a bit burnt out - physically and mentally... i am looking forward to the live in help. although noah seems to not be too sure of this new arrangement.. he has been clinging to me all morning..
now onto the guilty part... my friend julia and i have been planning our trip to fargo for a few weeks and now that its here (we leave tomorrow morning) i am exciting, guilty, apprehensive, relieved.. and a bunch of other emotions. will my boys be ok? will they still love me when i get home? how will they sleep? will they be confused as to why i'm not there tomorrow?
its crazy the guilt we as mom's can talk ourselves into. both dave and i felt this trip was important and a big step in just refueling and i am so looking forward to it but scared and sad all that same time. another issue i am dealing with is the excess skin my boys left me around my middle which has been really my insecurity issue lately. i feel alot of self loathing about my body and especially trying to dress it. after wearing the same clothes over and over i am excited to get some new things but so afraid that nothing will fit and i will end up so frustrated.. so if you think of us this weekend that would be great. we leave tomorrow early and come back later saturday afternoon. so its not that long...
anyways i should get going. got lots of cleaning to do now that my boys are out walking with grandma... i will post about my trip when i get back.. hoping for great deals!

goodbye and WELL DONE

its been three days since i breastfed. saying goodbye was easy and hard all at the same time. hard because its a little sad to not have that special time with boys. but easier knowing that i did it! i breastfed twins for 11 months! i am proud of myself and the boys for sticking it in there so long.i came across this drawer the other day in my kitchen and it took me back to the days in the NICU where for 6 weeks I pumped every three hours religiously. I filled jars and jars of milk. Eventually the NICU asked me to stop bringing it and I began to fill my moms freezer. When we left the NICU last June they had a nurses aid help us carry (on a cart) my two huge boxes of frozen milk into a cooler that filled the entire trunk. I am proud of myself for carrying on as it was not easy in the beginning. I am done now and although I will miss it I am stinking happy we did it!
My last nurse with each was special. i told them how lucky i felt to be their mom and as i looked down at them they each looked up at me with a twinkle in their eye and bit me.. ahh it was finished.

my thoughts too..

Eva wrote a great post here about the pros and cons of being a twin. Just whats been on my mind lately. I have always struggled in this aspect since the boys were born. Torn between not having enough arms or not being able to cuddle them seperatly. Lately its been at not being able to spend one on one time with them. The other night we were with friends and Noah was contently sitting on Rhonda's lap as she read stories to him. He loved it. It made me sad that I don't get to do that as often.. having two babies wiggling on your lap and fighting over who gets to chew the pages is not as peaceful as that. I love when one wakes up slightly earlier than the other and I get the chance for individual cuddles. I am encouraged that my kids will know how much I love them and when I don't have quite enough arms to hold them or enough one on one attention to give them. They do have each other and that is a beautiful thing...

divide & conquer

divide & conquer was the name of the game on Saturday when Dave and i went in to Winnipeg to catch the sale that our multiples club has twice a year. this is not your average sale. this is an arena filled with kids stuff. you name it they have it. i think i counted 23 high chairs alone.. the members of our club can sell stuff and members get first dibs and then its open to the public. we got there to stand in a line of about 200 which all got in quick and because of the size of the arena this did not feel crowded at all. we had been checking out the merchandise as we made our way along the outside of the glass.. i went for the clothes, shoes and small stuff while Dave headed for toys.. it was quite the site to see him pulling our red wagon through the isles and me with my huge Rubbermaid tub. again a little disappointed in the clothes area as its always so much girl stuff. i did manage to get some good stuff. when Dave and i met up i was pleasantly surprised at his achievements. i had warned him that the sale required you to be ruthless. don't give things a second thought as someone will come and swoop it away. the policy was throw it in the wagon think about it later. he had so much stuff.. and good stuff. we sat down in a corner to go through our stuff and decide what we wanted and what we would put back (people come around and clean up your unwanted stuff really quick) this sale is no joke!
at the end we had some great outside as well as inside toys, books, a couple videos, clothes and some other odds and ends. as we were sitting down to go through our stuff i finally took a second to look up and the line of "others" (ha ha that was our joke - i meant the public) the line was so long and as they started to let people in the arena got so crowded. there were probably upwards of 600 people in there. it was mayhem! we got in line quickly and paid and out the door as the line kept growing and growing.
it was a good time. i am so thankful the club does something like this. its so great to be able to know that twice a year there will be a good sale like this. the boys are loving there new toys.
so till next fall, thank you Manitoba Family of Multiples for another great day!

inspired...

two posts in one day! i wanted to blog about yesterday.. i felt inspired. there were a few times over the course of my day i was hit with feelings of hope and inspiration. i felt accomplishment and encouragement. i got to go to stay and play at my church which is always fun. its nice to be with other moms and interesting to watch my kids watch other kids and have new toys to play with. things like that help me stay in the game.. being a sahm is hard and some days feels so lonely.. i got to meet a fellow blogging mom Stacey whose blog i read but had never met. that was so nice. got out walking with the boys in the sunshine. yes finally we have sunshine. something about being outside that brings life. to me and the boys.
in the evening i attended a class at My Scrap Shoppe that I have been looking forward to for weeks. We altered a 16x20 canvas. Mine looked like this: (if you click on it you can see it bigger)I was pretty happy with it. I had such a great time. Felt so inspired and enjoyed spending time with the people there. I met another blogging mom Eva whose site I have lurked on for awhile. It was such a great evening. Can't remember one better in a long time! They really encouraged me in my creativity and to stop being so insecure and even convinced me to sign up for Super Scrap Day next weekend. It was a big step in the right direction as I remember to stop telling myself lies and to just be..... creatively ME!

must haves....

yesterday i wanted to blog badly and never got around to it and today i have at least three posts rattling around in my head so i will start with giving you my must have items that i use daily...

i love all things lotions, soaps, scrubs, etc... but two of my must haves leave me missing Vancouver.

The amazing uber talented Wade Pallister: friend, encourager, protector, advice giver, ultimate chef, best coffee maker, soap master and his family created Jah Jirah Soapworks Our household trys to never be without two of his amazing soaps.. First Sophie’s Sensitive Soother Soap which was created when their first child Sophia was born.. His products are all natural and made from the best ingredients. We've never had any diaper rash or anything and its great for smooth, soft, babies skin. The second which Dave is panicking at the thought of running out is Undercover Grubber Scrubber/Sleek & Sporty All-Purpose Miracle Soap. This soap is Dave's must have.. he uses it for everything. Soap, shampoo, and its great for getting out tough stains. Dave says its all about the tea tree oil. Check out the other varieties that they have. We have used them all... can't rave enough about it. Thank you Pallisters.

My second must have is from Escents its a close second fave in my shower. Its their
Rejuvenating Salt Scrub and it has yummy bergamot and grapefruit. Its the best skin polisher and leaves your skin feeling amazing. Sadly no Escents in my future and as my container slowly runs out it puts a smile on my face as I remember Commercial Drive.

So thanks Vancouver.. for friends, good food and the best skin care I have ever known.

life is not fair...

A fellow blogger of twins Snickollet lost her husband to cancer yesterday. Her twins are 9 months old. Emmie at Better Make It a Double has created a virtual candle to honor them. Snickollet writes beautifully of her love for him "I'm so sad on so many levels. I'm sad for GH, myself, and the twins for all the things we won't get to do as a foursome. I'm sad for the world at large for the loss of an incredible man. But he doesn't have cancer anymore. He's not sick anymore. And while the end came so incredibly quickly, we had said what needed to be said and he knew how intensely I loved him, which is the most important thing."
So as Emmie put it "
None of us can do a whole lot for her, but we can send her some love. Tonight, I will light a candle for Snickollet and her family. Maybe you can too*, and maybe go over and tell her."

who the heck are you?

10 1/2 months old stats:
Heavyweight: Noah 19lbs 2oz. 27 1/2"
Lightweight: Ari 18lbs 6.5oz. 26 5/8"

went to the city yesterday for an appointment with our pediatrician to see if he could shed some light on the boys condition.. he ordered a blood test to test for allergies and with only a few minutes to think about the fact that the boys were going to have their very first needle (other than when they were weeks old in the NICU) I would have to say it went well. I was not looking forward to it and when they were pricked (on their finger) they didn't even complain. They got upset as the tech had to squeeze three vials of blood out of their little chubby finger. not nice. I was so impressed by how calm they were and with no meltdowns we were out of there. Now to those of you with multiples you know that going out is not an easy task.. It takes much planning and by the end of the day I was exhausted. Physically, Mentally and Emotionally. My good friend came along to help me as I would have never made it all around the city without someone.
i know some of you have posted your experiences of what its like to take out multiples and the instant rock star status you get. it adds to the exhaustion of the day. answering a million questions and smiling at strangers more than you ever thought possible and the comments... i will give you an overview of the things i heard and overheard while pushing my double stroller through the mall...
-There was the usual "awe cute" "ooh twins" "wow" - which i am totally fine with. I love people who think my kids are cute and even though the novelty of it is probably that there is two if fine with me too.
-I hear the "double trouble" one alot. This one gets to me after a while. Who are you to say that my kids must be trouble. I find myself doubly blessed with the two of them. Its hard work but I don't come up to you and assume your kids are trouble.
-"Are they natural" "Did you use drugs to get them" - Who are you? Why strangers feel the need to ask me these questions is beyond me because its really no ones business. And the whole natural comment is just plain stupid.
-I don't mind the "You must have your hands full" seems kind of obvious...but whatever.
-Some lady told me she always wanted twins but her husband said no.. maybe she knows something the rest of us don't?
-I'm not a big fan of complete strangers thinking its ok to touch them.. do people go up to moms with one baby and put there dirty hands all over them.
-One dad said yesterday while we were changing diapers in the family room at the mall.. "I bet you can't wait till they are older. this must be a horrible stage." what? who are you? this one had me staring blankly at him with no good response.
-to the grandma that stopped me to stare at my boys and stand directly in front of the stroller when they were having an obvious all out meltdown.. MOVE OUT OF THE WAY!
and my all time fave from yesterday. mom and daughter walk by my very adorable well behaved kids and the mom turns to the daughter. "Oh look twins. Can you believe that? Ugg that is something I would NEVER want" ok lady.

after posting this realized that the twinkies post today is on the same subject.. go over there for similar and more stories of what not to do when approaching multiples in public (or not so public) places.

please don't misread the above. i don't mind people stopping me to tell me how cute they are and i love to answer peoples intelligent questions.

teeth are mean...

poor little guys.. having to grow teeth sure must be painful. add that on top of all the sickness and we have babies who are a little unhappier than usual. although i must admit they are handling it better than i would have thought. teething is a stage that is mean to all mother but mostly those of us with more than one.. hard to hold and comfort two who want your undivided attention.
the sickness continues on.. thanks to those of you who posted your thoughts. i too think allergies must be the culprit and i am pretty much over the idea that medicine can or will help.. i have made an appointment with the naturopathic doctor here in town as i have heard only good things about her. maybe she can shed some light onto our situation. we are getting our carpets cleaned and i have been freezing and drying their stuffed toys to get rid of dust mites. and although the boys are traumatized by the vacuum i do that too.
other than all that it has been a pretty good week. nice that it was short with the long weekend and all. having dave around is always so nice for me. he loves spending time with the boys and is just the best dad. last weekend i was away for the day and dave and the boys had a great time - their toy of choice the big boxes there big carseats came in. all day my three boys played in here..I'll leave you with these pics of my little boys growing up so fast... I think they are a little unsure of their new carseats but in just over a month we can turn them around and I think they will really like that.... Can't believe they were this small. Oh and speaking of small - please send out good thoughts for some family friends who at 30 weeks just had twin boys just under 3lbs. They are in Vancouver in the Neo-Natal Unit. All good thoughts to them as they are quite traumatized at there much to early birth. Ari & Noah on June 14, 2006 - Discharged from hospital at just barely 5lbs.
Ari & Noah on March 31, 2006 - Discharged from infant seats to big boy seats - 19lbsTesting out the new big boy seats.

sweet surrender

This article is my submission to the blog challenge sponsored by Art Bookbindery, "Empowering Writers to Self Publish."

Original post: August 2005 - My Perspective as a Doula on Eva's Birth.
Reverance... The wisdom, power, glory, and unadulterated love contained in childbirth absolutely bring's me to my knees. I am struck by a new phrase, insight, or revelation that expands my knowledge about birth, and my awe for the strength, endurance and brilliance of birthing women.
This rings true of this birth story…your birth story was as beautiful as it gets.
I met your mom about a month before you were born. She is beautiful and her heart is so good. She was sweet and soft spoken as she shared with me the feelings of the unknown as she prepared for your arrival. We watched a video the first time we met which showed different families and their birth stories. I liked your mom so much especially when I saw we cried in the same parts and I loved the way she rubbed her belly as she watched these other women bring life to their babies. I was excited to be apart of your arrival.

It was Friday July 29; I sprung out of bed at the sound of my pager going off. Excitement runs through my body as hearing my pager in the middle of the night is still a new experience. I spoke with your mom on the phone; she told me that she woke up at 4am feeling the contractions starting. They were still about 10 minutes apart. She told me they felt best when she was sitting on the toilet and I had heard that before. I asked her to time them for another half hour and see what happened. I also told her to eat a good meal as this next part might take awhile and once in the hospital she may not eat again. I spoke with your dad and made sure he was making her drink lots of water and pee lots too. I hung up the phone with the promise that they would call me again in a half hour. I didn’t feel much like sleeping anymore but went to lie down.

The phone rang again at about 5am and I could tell from your mom’s voice that the contractions were stronger at one point she even put the phone down and I could hear her focusing on what she was feeling. The power of a women’s body is incredible, I was already so proud of her.
We decided it was time to meet at the hospital. I got ready and remember walking out the door just as a cool breeze hit my face. The sun was beginning to shine warmly and I remember that there was a Celine Dion song playing on the radio as I drove through the pretty quiet streets. I got to the hospital and found your mom and dad in an assessment room. The nurse had just put on a monitor to hear your heartbeat. It was strong and loud. I then heard that your mom had worked so hard she was already dilated to 5cm. Your dad was funny and was cracking lots of jokes; the mood was light and pleasant. It wasn’t long and we met our nurse Susan who came to tell us they had a room ready for us. We walked slowly over. Your mom was so strong she had contractions and you could see she would focus all her strength and energy to them. Once in the room where we would meet you your mom got into the shower which was a nice relief. They had a stool and she sat while I let the shower head massage her back. We had problems adjusting the water temperature but finally we would get it perfect. Your mom handled contractions well in the shower. I remember the biggest change being when she would relax and let them flow over her. We sat in a lot of silence; birth is such an intimate event that requires so much reverence.

After about an hour your mom got tired and we moved to the bed where lying on her side worked the best. It was hard to lie down but we continued to focus during the contractions. The Dr. came in to see us and remarked that progress was being made and your mom was doing so well. We spent this time just resting between contractions and focusing on releasing the tension when one would come. Your mom was so strong, she passed on pain medication when it was offered and we were in tune with each other and remembering that her body was designed to have you and she was doing it. It was good to remember to focus on one contraction at a time. This was the transition phase and your mom wasn’t getting much of a break. Her uterus was working really hard to bring you into this world. At about 9am the nurse checked and her cervix had dilated to 7cm. We were all surprised at how fast your mom was progressing. She was doing everything right and you were coming quickly. Things were intense and your mom chanted “I can I can I can” over and over and I know this positive thinking was helping you come down and get ready to show us your pretty face. At 9:30 the doctor broke the bag of waters and with a gush things moved very fast. Your mom’s cervix was 10cm by now and it was time to push. We were at the finish line. Your mom did so well and was so strong during this hard time. She pushed only three times and you were born. You came so quickly and with one smooth movement you were on your mom’s tummy. It was a miracle. I had to remember to breathe as I took in all the strength that your birth created. In me as tears flowed down my cheeks. In your dad as his eyes were wide open as he watched you come out, as he wiped his tears and cut the cord. Watching your mom was what hit me the most, she looked so beautiful and I knew that she had set her mind to take each moment as it came. She did it! She was radiant as she looked at you and checked you over. You were so beautiful. Your birth day started at 9:59am on July 29th, 2005.

So there it is your story. Remember your strength as a woman, I am sure your mom will teach you many wonderful things and I hope as you read this you will remember the strength she showed as she willed her body to bring you into this world. Her love and her strength and her belief in her body’s process won in the end. Here is to life, love and lots of happiness.

one reason i LOVE my twins!

we are loving spring! we have been out almost every day walking which the boys seem to love. the best part of our walks is one of the reasons i love having twins..they hold hands in the stroller. every time we look they are holding hands.. not just a one off thing. its adorable! there are so many sweet things that i get to take part in as they discover and love each other. so here is one of many reasons i love that i get two!

life

i have been challenged this week to think about what brings me life and what springs passion to existence in me. i think about my passion of being a doula daily. i have been grieving that it has been a whole year since my last birth. i was too pregnant and it was a hard birth... i feel like that part of my life is so far away. is it just that i am different or is it fear that holds me back i am not sure. it was easier to be a doula in a big city where everyone knew what a doula was and there were so many of us. a community. here its lonely and scary and most people don't even know what the word means. i want more aiden's, eva's, emma's, ayla's, benjamin's. i remember so clearly the day they and all the others came into the world.. it was a miracle, it was life and it brought me joy. i am tired of being afraid of pursuing the passion... i did a search on my blog about all i have written about being a doula and re-read some of the birth stories that i posted. went back and read the stories i wrote about each birth and what it meant to me...the innocence, the strength of a laboring mother, the tears in the dad's eyes, the exhilaration that entered a room with each push, the burst of life that each baby brought. its beauty at its best and i will not be satisfied to never be a part of that again.
i need courage oh and my boys to sleep better at night. (we are really close to the latter)
these pictures help me remember my passion for life...minutes after birth.

slow and steady wins the race?

we are doing better these days.. i think. everytime i say that something else happens. last week was rough.. after the boys being so sick and the flu going ping pong between the two of them i caught it and was sick for a few days... luckily my mom was there to help me cause taking care of two and running back and forth to the bathroom is not fun. so hopefully things will continue to get better.. i have officially stopped all meds cause i am sure none of it is helping anymore anyways...
friday night i got away with a girlfriend.. we headed to the city for shopping and a late supper. it was great. the rest of the weekend we spent laying low the boys are playing some catch up on sleep. i think on friday they had about 6 or 7 naps.. it was crazy. i guess there little bodies are healing. last night i spent some time with some girls from church and we had a blast drinking slushy fruity drinks, eating bean dip and puffed wheat cake and just chatting. i miss that.. talking with the girls. it felt great. so much on my to do list this week. lots of cleaning and disinfecting my house. it just kind of has that sick smell to it. hosting our small group this week so the house needs some help and i have to come up with something to make that night..
well ari is wrapping an extension cord around his body so i should probably go and tend to that.. hope to write again more this week..

sick and tired of being sick and tired...

seriously how long can two little sweet boys be sick? yuck. we are going on a little over a month now of sick... runny noses, congestion, croup, horrible cough, puking, diarea, fever for weeks... and the list goes on. could it get any worse. since friday both boys have now had the flu with massive diarea.. their cough has not changed. we saw the doctor last week and she put them on inhalers which they hate.. so i give them little puffs through this mask... ahhh will it ever end? if things don't change when we go back for our two week follow up we will have to do xrays... the cough is so bad. no longer croup but some nights they wake up with 10 minuted coughing fits... it happens all day too but is worse at night. my kitchen counter is a mini pharmacy... tylenol, motrin, dimetapp, 2 inhalers and the best of it all herbs.. i am a believer. i went to see my herbalist who had changed the boys lives when they were so fussy a few months ago.. she gave me catnip&fennel then and so i went back and she gave me two herbs to help boost their immune systems.. i am serious the next day they were happier and a bit healthier. it helped clear up an ear infection, runny nose and congestion. my poor little guys are such troopers tho.. i have to give it to them they have their moments but for the most part they are so good. i realized last week that i am finally beginning to enjoy them. the love has always been there but i see them and want to be with them now. i want to see what they will do and what face they will make. when they wake up from their naps and they reach out for me it melts my heart.
i had high hopes of writing some good blogs but with things they way they are i have had no time. stay tuned..

i cut off all my hair... and i love it. i just had to tell you sorry no photos yet but hopefully i will take one today so you can see it.
inspired by dixie i too want to know who you all are that read Our Life Voyage. i have been afraid to post something like this afraid you will be turned off and quit reading. its nice to know who you are and where you came from (even those of you i know - please do comment). i am always so amazed at the crazy connections the blogger world makes... i'd also love to link you if you are here and not already being linked... for more connections. so please do tell me who you are and how you got here... please.. pretty please.
